Did you ever have a word that rubbed you the wrong way?
August 17, 2015
I do (shocker!) - the word is SERVE/SERVING….literally when people use it in any context other than “serving” food it is like fingernails going down a chalkboard for me…
This is something I have kept to myself until today. I was having brunch with a special person that has an incredible soul and does amazing work to help others. We were talking and the word came up “SERVING”. Secretly, I have been hoping that this topic would come up naturally because he is the perfect person to have this conversation with and I value his thoughts on these topics so much…and when it did I was so excited!
I couldn't help myself so I launched into the dialogue I had done so many times in my head!
“The word SERVE bothers me”… As his eyes widen I continue with my thoughts. I explain how when I tell people about City Chik and the current projects - I am often met with a response along the lines of “It is so great that you SERVE” (can’t you hear the tone in your head- like so “admirable of you”) For me it doesn't feel like SERVING ….To me- I am going some place and working alongside local people on these grassroots projects- together we are connecting with love and compassion in our desire to create a positive impact. Each of us bringing something the other doesn't have and when we are done we realize we could not of done this if we didn't have the other. We are grateful that we have been able to make this mark on the world together.
I continue to say that when I hear the word “SERVE” it sounds like one is above the other. Almost looking down on the other. That there is a sense of division in the meaning- separating us and to be quite frank it makes me uncomfortable because that goes against what I believe in my heart to be true.
I believe in my heart that we are here on this earth to build each other, to connect with each other, to learn from each other, to have compassion for each other and most of all to create a world that is built on love with each other.
So my apologies in advance if you mention the word “SERVE” and I start to have this dialogue with you…but as my brunch date said..."you have a point and you should share your thoughts with people" So you can thank him:)
With oodles of love and gratitude
PS- the pic below is a private moment caught when I was filled with gratitude because of what I know in my heart to be true had just happened!:)
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
